How does solar power work?

Solar panels are made up of many photovoltaic (PV) cells that convert sunlight into electricity. A solar panel works by allowing photons, or particles of light, to knock electrons free from atoms. This process generates a flow of electricity.

This initial flow of electricity from the solar panel is a Direct Current (DC). The solar inverter converts the DC current to Alternating Current (AC), which is the power we use in our homes.

Solar equipment is safe, self-sustaining, and built to last 30+ years. Owning solar does not require any special maintenance or technical skill.

In most grid-tied systems, the AC current is sent out to the power grid, generating credits for the homeowner to use as needed (day or night). In some setups, the electricity generated by the solar system is used by the home first, and extra electricity is sent to the grid and credited for times when the home is not generating solar power, such as at night. In either setup, homes with solar panels are able to generate most or all of the power they need, and the power grid helps to manage the power demands.

In some states, like California, excess electricity that is not used by the end of the year can be rolled over to the following year, or sold to the power company. In other words you can be paid for any excess electricity you generate and don’t use.
